Specialized dental solutions

Dr. DeSantis offers a wide range of dental solutions for patients with specialized health issues. If you suffer from one of the following, look to Dr. DeSantis for the expert solutions and compassionate care you deserve:

Teeth Grinding
Individuals who grind their teeth at night are often unaware of their habit. However, the forces exerted on both the teeth and the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can be very destructive. A custom-made night guard can provide essential relief by alleviating relieve pressure on the TMJ protecting the teeth from further damage.

TMJ
Many patients use the acronym “TMJ” to refer to the painful symptoms related to Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Symptoms may include pain in the joint itself, pain in the muscles required for chewing, and limited movement of the lower jaw.

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea occurs when a person momentarily stops breathing during sleep. This can occur hundreds of times during the course of each night. A common cause of sleep apnea is obstruction of the airway by the patient’s anatomy. If you suffer from symptoms of sleep apnea, Dr. DeSantis can perform a thorough assessment and recommend a specially designed night guard that repositions the lower jaw to improve airflow and help restore consistent breathing during sleep.

Cleft Palate/Obturator
Because many cleft lip and palate patients have missing teeth in the area of the cleft, they can benefit from a prosthodontist’s care. Although most cleft palates are now successfully closed with surgery, some patients require an obturator to close the palatal defect. Dr. DeSantis has the specialized skills to fabricate an obturator that will allow the patient to enjoy satisfactory speech and swallowing.

Congenital and Developmental Mouth Defects
Some individuals have missing teeth because they are either misshapen or never developed properly. Others have poorly developed tooth structure throughout the mouth. In either case, a prosthodontist’s expertise is needed. Dr. DeSantis uses his specialized skills to determine the best way to replace and/or restore teeth to proper form and function.
